The Indonesian government predicts that the downstream project for the critical mineral mining industry will benefit the national economy. However, in upstream areas such as North Maluku, the local community is paying a very high price in terms of health and environmental destruction. While the project is said to increase regional prosperity, the rising poverty rate in North Maluku indicates that it is actually widening inequality.

The Halmahera Study Forum (FOSHAL), Trend Asia, and the Indonesian Legal Aid Foundation (YLBHI) revealed the problematic practice of nickel downstreaming in North Maluku in a position paper entitled “The Destructive Power of Nickel Downstreaming: Natural Bankruptcy and the Suffering of the People of North Maluku.”
