Campaign Against Coal Power Plant
1. Together with our network, we are actively involved in the production and promotion of a “box office” documentary (reaching 36 million viewers) entitled “Sexy Killers” (about how the political economy behind the coal industry and its impact on society).
2. Together with local and national networks, we started a campaign (until now) against the high-emission Java 9 and 10 coal power plant (CPP) projects in Banten. Among them, several times in front of the South Korean Embassy in Jakarta and public spaces in Banten. We also cooperate with South Korean civil society organizations in filing lawsuits against South Korean companies and banks. Exposure and campaigning for the controversy over this project then led the South Korean Parliament to summon the government and some funding agencies involved in the Java 9 and 10 CPP projects resulting in a delay of the project for half a year (until May 2020) before it was finally signed.
Capacity Building
Together with Greenpeace, Watch Doc, Tempo Institute, Bright Sumatra for Clean Energy and Kanopi Bengkulu, we conducted capacity building activities for residents and local partner networks in Sumatra in the form of documentation and investigation training. We trained 16 out of 11 members of the network of civil society organizations from 6 provinces in Sumatra and developed modules and curricula for the activity.

Initial Coal Financing Campaign Collaboration
Together with national and international networks (Asia Energy Network), we exposed Sumitomo Mitsui Bank Corporation, which is still involved in financing the dirty coal industry. This action in the Philippines made SMBC withdraw its application to obtain green accreditation under Green Climate Finance (GCF).
In collaboration with Greenpeace, Walhi, and Jatam, we encouraged CIMB bank to develop a new policy to end financing the coal industry.
However, this new policy only covers ongoing gross investments, such as the Java 9-10 PP project in Cilegon, Banten.
Together with the Netherlands-based non-profit organization, Recourse, we highlight the role of IFC (International Finance Corporation)-in the Green Equity Approach (GEA), which aims to exit coal’s equity clients by 2030. Our report reveals two IFC clients who have just signed the GEA; one among them, Hana Bank Indonesia, is still financing the new CPP project.

Capacity Building
Investigation and documentation training for youth in areas affected by the Java 9-10 CPP proiect. Twenty participants from 3 main villages in the areas affected attended the training.

Report Launch
Together with the network, namely National JATAM, East Kalimantan JATAM, National WALHI, East Kalimantan WALHI, Forest Watch Indonesia, POKJA 30, Coastal and Fishermen Working Group, we published the report “The New Capital for Whom?”. This report exposes the new capital project’s social, economic, and environmental impacts and then opposes the mega project relocating the Indonesian capital to East Kalimantan. We also highlight the oligarchs-concession owners and political elites who will benefit from moving the money. This report received significant attention from the mass media and the public.
Together with WALHI Jakarta and Pena Masyarakat, we published a report, “Java 9-10: A Korean Forced Investment in the midst of A Climate and Humanitarian Disaster,” a campaign against Java 9-10 CPP project.
This report exposes how forced dirty energy projects are economically, environmentally, and socially unprofitable.
Together with Recourse, we launched the report “Coming clean: Can the IFC help end coal finance?” This report highlights Hana Bank Indonesia, which is still financing the Java 9-10 CPP project even though this financial institution is an IFC client in the Green Equity Approach scheme. This report follows up on previous reports on IFC and Hana Bank Indonesia on the Java 9-10 dirty energy project.
